Flagyl generic name is metronidazole: the alcohol rule and why
- metronidazole
- Tablet
- 200mg, 400mg
- Prescription only
The flagyl generic name is metronidazole, and the first thing worth knowing about it is the one instruction people remember and often get wrong: do not drink alcohol during the course or for forty-eight hours after the last dose. The reaction — flushing, throbbing headache, violent nausea, vomiting, racing heart — is described as disulfiram-like, after the drug deliberately used to produce it in alcohol dependence. The evidence base for how frequently it happens with metronidazole is weaker than the warning's prominence suggests, but the reaction is unpleasant enough and avoidable enough that nobody argues for testing it.
What it kills that other antibiotics do not
Metronidazole works on anaerobes — bacteria that grow where there is no oxygen — and on several protozoa. That makes it the drug for bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebiasis, dental and intra-abdominal anaerobic infections, and Clostridioides difficile colitis. It is also part of Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens.
It has essentially no activity against the ordinary aerobic bacteria behind most chest and urinary infections, which is why it is frequently prescribed alongside another antibiotic rather than instead of one. The two cover different halves of a mixed infection.
Doses that vary a great deal by indication
Single-dose regimens exist — 2 g once for trichomoniasis or bacterial vaginosis in some protocols. Standard courses run 400 mg or 500 mg two or three times daily for five to seven days for most anaerobic infections. Giardiasis and amoebiasis use their own schedules. H. pylori eradication uses twice-daily dosing for seven to fourteen days alongside other drugs.
That range is why guessing from a leftover pack does not work: the same tablet in the same strength is a one-day treatment for one condition and a two-week one for another.

Courses are short, so the thirty-tablet pack covers most indications with some left over. Among the cheapest antibiotics in the catalogue per course.
Treating the partner, and why it is not optional
In trichomoniasis the partner is treated simultaneously whether or not they have symptoms, because asymptomatic carriage is common in men and reinfection is otherwise close to guaranteed. The same logic applies loosely to recurrent bacterial vaginosis, although the evidence for partner treatment there is weaker and current guidance does not routinely recommend it.
Avoid sex until both partners have completed treatment. This is the single most common reason a correctly prescribed course appears to fail.
Side effects and what they mean
A persistent metallic taste is near-universal and harmless; it fades after the course. Nausea, loss of appetite and furred tongue are common. Dark urine is a normal consequence of the drug's metabolites and is not a warning sign.
What does warrant attention: numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, which indicates peripheral neuropathy and is more likely on prolonged or repeated courses — it usually resolves on stopping but not always. Seizures and encephalopathy are rare but reported. Any of these means stopping and getting advice rather than finishing on principle.
Interactions
Alcohol, as above, including the alcohol in some cough syrups, mouthwashes and tonics — worth reading labels during a course. Warfarin effect increases markedly and INR needs monitoring. Lithium levels rise. Phenytoin and phenobarbital accelerate clearance. Disulfiram taken within two weeks can cause acute psychosis and the combination is avoided.
In pregnancy, metronidazole is used where the indication justifies it — bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy is itself associated with preterm birth — but the single high-dose regimen is avoided. That is a prescriber decision.
Where this fits with the rest of the catalogue
Vaginal symptoms are frequently self-diagnosed and frequently wrong. Bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and candidiasis produce overlapping discomfort and need entirely different drugs — metronidazole for the first two, fluconazole for the third. Treating thrush with metronidazole or vice versa is common, achieves nothing, and delays the actual treatment. A test rather than a guess is what settles it.
Recurrent infection of any of these kinds deserves a look at why rather than a longer course, and where recurrent vaginal symptoms are making sex painful or impossible, that pain is itself treatable — see clinical sexology, where the first consultation at this studio is free. Other antibiotics are under antibiotics.
What the alcohol reaction is, and how well established
Metronidazole is thought to inhibit aldehyde dehydrogenase in the same way disulfiram does, producing acetaldehyde accumulation when alcohol is taken — flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting and tachycardia. The warning appears on every pack.
The evidence underneath it is thinner than the warning’s prominence suggests. Several reviews have questioned whether the interaction occurs as reliably in humans as the labelling implies, and controlled data are limited. What is not in dispute is that reactions have been reported, that they are unpleasant, and that the cost of avoiding alcohol for a week-long course is close to zero.
The practical position: observe the warning, including for forty-eight hours after the last dose, without treating a single accidental exposure as an emergency. Significant symptoms — chest pain, breathlessness, persistent vomiting — do need attention.
Partner treatment, and why courses fail without it
In trichomoniasis the partner is treated simultaneously regardless of symptoms, because asymptomatic carriage in men is common and reinfection otherwise follows within weeks. Sex is avoided until both have completed treatment. A course that appears to fail has usually succeeded and been undone.
For bacterial vaginosis the evidence on partner treatment is weaker and current guidance does not routinely recommend it, although research on male partner treatment has been revisited recently. Recurrence is common and is a reason for review rather than for repeated identical courses.
Getting the diagnosis right first
Vaginal symptoms are self-diagnosed accurately less often than people expect. Bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and candidiasis overlap in presentation and need entirely different treatment — metronidazole for the first two, fluconazole for the third. Treating one as the other achieves nothing and delays the right answer by a week.
A test is the difference. Recurrent symptoms treated repeatedly without one is the pattern that eventually turns out to be something else entirely, and the delay is measured in months.
Storage
Keep Flagyl Generic in its original packaging at room temperature, away from steam and direct sun; the bathroom cabinet is the one place it should not live. The expiry that counts is the one printed on the foil, not the one on the outer carton.
Dark urine during a course is a normal consequence of the drug’s metabolites and not a warning sign. A persistent metallic taste is equally normal and resolves afterwards. Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet is not normal and is a reason to stop and seek advice.
If symptoms return quickly
Recurrence within weeks usually means one of three things: reinfection from an untreated partner, the wrong diagnosis, or a resistant organism. The first two account for the overwhelming majority.
Repeating the same course without establishing which is the pattern that turns a one-week problem into a six-month one. A test — and in trichomoniasis, treating the partner — is what breaks it.
Questions
How long after the course can I drink?
Forty-eight hours after the last tablet is the conventional advice and is worth following.
Can I use it for a urinary infection?
No. It has no useful activity against the organisms that cause ordinary cystitis.
Does the metallic taste mean anything is wrong?
No. It is a known and harmless effect that resolves after treatment.
Is a single 2 g dose as good as a week of tablets?
For trichomoniasis the single dose is an accepted regimen; for bacterial vaginosis the multi-day course has better cure rates. The choice depends on the diagnosis.
The label these figures come from
Indications, dosing, the alcohol interaction and neuropathy warnings follow the FDA prescribing information for metronidazole and the sexually transmitted infection treatment guidelines published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Where the facts about Flagyl Generic come from
Flagyl Generic: the strengths, the dosing, what the tablet form changes, the contraindications and the interaction warnings set out above are the ones in the approved labelling for metronidazole — the current FDA label in DailyMed — read against the European product information where this molecule is licensed in the EU. Where a figure here differs from the one in your own pack insert, the insert for the pack you hold is the document to follow.
Flagyl Generic touches sexually transmitted infection, telling a partner and sex during treatment, and that part of the page was read before publication by Dr. Andrea Biserni, psychologist, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, Ordine degli Psicologi della Toscana n. 3572 sez. A (verify in the national register). The milligrams were not: he is not a prescriber, and the dosing and safety wording for metronidazole stays as the regulator wrote it.
How ordering works
Packs of Flagyl Generic run from $24.37 to $223.21. The figure covers the medicine, the pharmacist check and tracked delivery; customs charges raised at the destination are not. Dispatch and tracking are set out under shipping and delivery, what can and cannot come back under returns and refunds, and the contract itself in the terms of sale.
Prices quoted for Flagyl Generic are indicative; the amount charged is confirmed in writing before any payment is taken. As a prescription-only medicine it is never dispatched without a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber — send it through the prescription service and a pharmacist checks it against the strength and quantity before release. Nothing here replaces advice from your own doctor or pharmacist about metronidazole, and the studio does not diagnose or prescribe by e-mail.
