Antabuse generic (disulfiram): where alcohol hides, and why supervision works
- disulfiram
- Tablet
- 250mg, 500mg
- Prescription only
Antabuse generic is disulfiram, and it is the only medicine in this catalogue whose entire purpose is to make something unpleasant happen. It blocks aldehyde dehydrogenase, so alcohol is metabolised as far as acetaldehyde and then stops. Acetaldehyde accumulates, and within about ten minutes of a drink produces flushing, a pounding headache, nausea and vomiting, racing heart and a drop in blood pressure that can last for hours. That reaction is the treatment. It does not reduce craving; it raises the price of acting on one.
Why supervised dosing changes the outcome
The weakness of disulfiram is obvious: the simplest way to drink on it is to stop taking it for a few days first. Trials consistently show markedly better abstinence rates when the daily tablet is taken under supervision — a partner, a family member, a pharmacist, a clinic — than when it is self-administered. That is not a comment on willpower; it is the structural feature that makes the drug work.
It also means the medicine works best inside a treatment programme with psychological support rather than as a prescription handed over alone. The evidence for disulfiram is strongest exactly in that combination, which is worth knowing before expecting a tablet to do the whole job.

Usual maintenance is 250 mg daily, sometimes 500 mg initially and sometimes 125 mg where tolerance is an issue. Treatment continues for months rather than weeks — the point is to get through the period in which a single impulsive drink would restart everything.
Where alcohol hides
This is the practical knowledge that prevents most unexpected reactions, and it surprises people every time. Mouthwash, many of which are around twenty per cent alcohol. Cough and cold syrups. Alcohol-based hand sanitiser, through skin absorption with heavy use. Aftershave and some skin tonics. Vinegar-heavy sauces and dressings. Desserts containing wine or spirits, including sauces where the alcohol has not been cooked off. Some herbal tinctures. Communion wine.
The drug persists after the last tablet: a reaction remains possible for up to two weeks. Anyone planning to drink after stopping should allow that fortnight rather than assuming the effect ends with the course.
Who must not take it
Significant cardiovascular disease, since the reaction involves hypotension and tachycardia and has caused cardiovascular collapse. Severe hepatic impairment. Psychosis. Pregnancy. And nobody is started on it while still intoxicated — at least twenty-four hours alcohol-free is required before the first dose.
Hepatotoxicity is the serious adverse effect to monitor for: rare, occasionally severe, and the reason liver function is checked at baseline and periodically. Jaundice, dark urine, unexplained fatigue or right upper abdominal pain means stopping and being assessed the same day. Peripheral neuropathy and optic neuritis occur with prolonged use. Drowsiness, metallic taste and headache are common early and settle.
Interactions
Metronidazole is contraindicated — the combination has caused acute psychosis, which is relevant because metronidazole is itself in this catalogue. Phenytoin levels rise substantially. Warfarin effect increases. Isoniazid can cause neurological effects in combination. Theophylline levels rise. Anyone starting a new medicine while on disulfiram should have the combination checked.
What it does not address
Disulfiram does not touch craving, and craving is what most people describe as the hardest part. Acamprosate and naltrexone work on that side and are sometimes used alongside or instead. Nor does it address what the drinking was doing — the anxiety it was managing, the relationship it was a symptom of, the sleep it was substituting for.
That last point has a specific sexual dimension that is rarely discussed and is extremely common: alcohol is both a cause of erectile difficulty and a self-treatment for the anxiety about it, which makes a loop that neither a drink nor a tablet breaks. Sobriety frequently brings sexual problems into view that the drinking was obscuring, and that is a reason to have support in place rather than a reason to avoid stopping. Clinical sexology and couple work address exactly that, and the first consultation at this studio is free.
Setting it up so that it works
Disulfiram taken unsupervised produces outcomes close to placebo in several trials; taken under supervision it produces substantially better abstinence rates. That difference is not about honesty — it is that the drug’s only mechanism is deterrence, and deterrence that can be removed by skipping three days is not much of a deterrent.
Supervision can be a partner, a family member, a pharmacist or a clinic. What matters is that someone sees the tablet taken, daily, and that this is agreed in advance as part of the treatment rather than imposed as surveillance. Couples who set it up explicitly, as a shared arrangement with a defined end point, tend to find it workable; couples where it becomes policing tend not to.
That conversation is worth having before the first prescription rather than after the first missed day.
A two-week window after stopping
Disulfiram inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase irreversibly, and the enzyme has to be regenerated. That takes up to about two weeks, during which a drink can still provoke a reaction.
Two consequences. Anyone stopping treatment and planning to drink should allow the fortnight rather than assuming the effect ends with the last tablet. And anyone who stopped a few days ago and has a reaction is not experiencing something unexpected.
What else is available
Disulfiram does not reduce craving, and for many people craving is the hardest part. Acamprosate and naltrexone both act on that side and work by different mechanisms — acamprosate on glutamate signalling, naltrexone on opioid receptors and the rewarding effect of alcohol. They are sometimes used alongside disulfiram and sometimes instead.
None of the three is a treatment on its own. The evidence for all of them is strongest in combination with psychological support, and the drug choice is a smaller decision than whether that support is in place.
Storage
Leave Antabuse Generic in the blister or bottle it arrives in, at normal room temperature, and keep it out of the bathroom. Anything past its printed expiry goes back to a pharmacy for disposal rather than into household waste.
Store them where they are visible rather than tucked away — the visibility is part of the point with a supervised daily medicine — but out of reach of children. And tell anyone who might treat you in an emergency that you are taking it, because the reaction looks like several other things and the treatment differs.
Before the first tablet
At least twenty-four hours without alcohol. Liver function checked. A plan for who supervises the daily dose. And a clear-out of the hidden sources: mouthwash, cough syrup, alcohol-containing hand gel, aftershave, and the vinegar-heavy sauces that catch people in week two.
Tell anyone who might treat you in an emergency that you are on it, because the reaction resembles several other things and the management differs.
Timescales, and what to send with the request
Strength first, then quantity. Antabuse Generic is listed as 250mg, 500mg; whichever of those the prescription names is what gets dispensed, and the pack size you choose only changes how many arrive. Packs here run from 20 tablets up to 360 tablets.
Checks clear inside one working day as a rule, and orders are released in the sequence they arrive rather than by what they are worth. Antabuse Generic travels on the standard tracked service like everything else in alcoholism. When a prescription needs clarifying, the pharmacy contacts you the same day it is spotted.
Questions
How long does the reaction last?
From thirty minutes to several hours depending on how much alcohol was taken. Severe reactions need medical attention.
Can I stop it for a special occasion?
Not safely within two weeks, and that question is usually worth discussing with whoever is supporting your treatment rather than answering alone.
Does it reduce the urge to drink?
No. It changes the consequences, not the craving. Other medicines address craving directly.
What if I drink by accident, in a sauce?
A small quantity may produce a mild reaction. A significant one, or symptoms involving chest pain or breathlessness, needs medical help.

Where the facts about Antabuse Generic come from
Antabuse Generic: the strengths, the dosing, what the tablet form changes, the contraindications and the interaction warnings set out above are the ones in the approved labelling for disulfiram — the current FDA label in DailyMed — read against the European product information where this molecule is licensed in the EU. Where a figure here differs from the one in your own pack insert, the insert for the pack you hold is the document to follow.
Antabuse Generic touches drinking, relapse and the motivation a tablet cannot supply, and that part of the page was read before publication by Dr. Andrea Biserni, psychologist, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, Ordine degli Psicologi della Toscana n. 3572 sez. A (verify in the national register). The milligrams were not: he is not a prescriber, and the dosing and safety wording for disulfiram stays as the regulator wrote it.
How ordering works
Packs of Antabuse Generic run from $31.35 to $320.98. The figure covers the medicine, the pharmacist check and tracked delivery; customs charges raised at the destination are not. Dispatch and tracking are set out under shipping and delivery, what can and cannot come back under returns and refunds, and the contract itself in the terms of sale.
Prices quoted for Antabuse Generic are indicative; the amount charged is confirmed in writing before any payment is taken. As a prescription-only medicine it is never dispatched without a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber — send it through the prescription service and a pharmacist checks it against the strength and quantity before release. Nothing here replaces advice from your own doctor or pharmacist about disulfiram, and the studio does not diagnose or prescribe by e-mail.
