Propecia generic (finasteride): a twelve-month commitment, not a course
- finasteride
- Film-coated tablet
- 1mg, 5mg
- Prescription only
Propecia generic is finasteride 1 mg, and the most useful thing to understand before starting is what success looks like. It is not regrowth. For most men the realistic outcome is that hair loss stops where it is — roughly nine in ten men on treatment either maintain or improve over two years in the registration data — with some thickening of existing hair and modest regrowth at the crown in a minority. Anyone expecting a restored hairline at twenty-five will be disappointed by a drug that is doing exactly what it is supposed to.
How it works, and why the timeline is what it is
Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha reductase type 2, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. DHT is what miniaturises genetically susceptible follicles; reducing scalp DHT by around sixty per cent halts that process. It does nothing to follicles that have already died, which is why starting early matters far more than any other variable.
Hair grows slowly and in cycles, so the effect is invisible for months. Three to six months before any change, twelve months before a fair assessment. An increase in shedding during the first weeks is common and is follicles synchronising into a new growth phase — it is not the drug accelerating the problem, although it reliably frightens people into stopping.
Stopping returns the scalp to where it would have been without treatment within about twelve months. The benefit is held, not banked.
Prices by strength
| Pack | 1 mg | 5 mg |
|---|---|---|
| 20 tablets | $27.85 | $40.62 |
| 30 tablets | $33.23 | $52.12 |
| 60 tablets | $55.02 | $94.73 |
| 90 tablets | $73.67 | $138.25 |
| 120 tablets | $89.72 | $174.57 |
| 180 tablets | $121.40 | $247.75 |
| 360 tablets | $238.25 | $489.18 |
The 5 mg strength is the dose licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia, not for hair. Some men split 5 mg tablets to approximate 1 mg as an economy; the split is approximate, the tablets are film-coated for a reason, and the saving at these prices is small enough that it is not worth the imprecision.
The sexual side effects, discussed properly
Reduced libido, erectile difficulty and reduced ejaculate volume are reported in the trials at rates of one to two per cent above placebo. Most cases resolve on stopping and many resolve while continuing. That is the data.
What complicates it is the nocebo effect, which is unusually well documented for this specific drug: in blinded studies, men told about sexual side effects report them several times more often than men who are not told. That does not mean the effects are imaginary — it means expectation contributes measurably, which is itself a reason to be told plainly rather than to discover it online halfway through.
There is also a contested entity, post-finasteride syndrome, describing persistent sexual and cognitive symptoms after stopping. Causation is not established and the research is ongoing. The honest position: the risk of a persistent problem appears low, it is not zero in the reported literature, and a man for whom sexual function is the overriding concern is entitled to weigh that against a cosmetic benefit.
If erectile difficulty does appear on treatment, the useful question is whether it began with the tablet or with the worrying about the tablet — and the distinction is answerable. Erections intact on waking and when alone point away from a pharmacological cause. That assessment is part of what clinical sexology does, and the first consultation at this studio is free.
Handling, and the one absolute rule
Finasteride is teratogenic and causes abnormalities of the external genitalia in a male fetus. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle broken or crushed tablets — the coating on intact tablets prevents contact with the active ingredient, but a split tablet does not have one. This is the practical argument against splitting 5 mg tablets in a shared household.
It also lowers PSA by roughly half, which matters for prostate cancer screening: anyone on it needs the laboratory to know, or the result will be read as reassuring when it is not.
The alternatives, briefly
Topical minoxidil works by a different mechanism and the two are frequently combined, with better results than either alone. Dutasteride inhibits both enzyme subtypes and is more potent but is not licensed for hair loss in most countries. For alopecia areata — patchy autoimmune hair loss rather than pattern thinning — finasteride does nothing, and baricitinib is the relevant treatment. Finasteride sits in the hair loss category; baricitinib is a dermatology prescription and is not part of this catalogue.
Measuring progress honestly
Hair loss is slow and memory is unreliable, which is why self-assessment on finasteride is close to useless without photographs. The method that works: standardised photographs at baseline and then every three months, from the same angles, in the same light, with hair dry and in the same style. Crown from directly above, hairline from the front, both temples.
Without that, two errors are common. Men conclude it is not working at month four, when nothing visible was ever expected before month six. And men conclude it has stopped working when what has actually happened is that maintenance looks like nothing happening — which is exactly what success looks like for most users.
The shedding phase
An increase in shedding in the first weeks to months affects a proportion of men starting finasteride and reliably alarms them. It reflects follicles synchronising into a new growth cycle, it is temporary, and it is not the drug accelerating the loss.
Stopping because of it is common and self-defeating. If shedding is heavy and persists beyond about three months, that is worth raising with a prescriber — but the first six weeks are expected.
Combining treatments
Topical minoxidil works by a different mechanism and the combination outperforms either alone in the published comparisons. It is applied to the scalp once or twice daily, has its own initial shedding phase, and is maintenance in the same way finasteride is — stopping returns the scalp to baseline.
For patchy autoimmune hair loss, neither drug is relevant: that is alopecia areata, and baricitinib is the treatment with evidence behind it. Confusing the two is the commonest error in this category, and the distinction is visible — pattern loss thins diffusely at the crown and temples, alopecia areata produces discrete smooth patches.
PSA, and why the laboratory needs to know
Finasteride roughly halves serum PSA. A man on it with a PSA of 2 has an effective untreated value of about 4, which is a different clinical picture entirely.
Anyone on finasteride having a PSA test should ensure the requesting clinician and the laboratory know, so the result is interpreted with the correction applied. A reassuring number that has not been doubled is the specific way prostate cancer gets missed in this population.
Storage
Store Propecia Generic as it arrives, in the pack, below twenty-five degrees and out of reach of children. Loose film-coated tablet transferred into a pill organiser lose both their expiry date and their protection from moisture.
Keep tablets intact and in the pack. The film coating prevents contact with the active ingredient, which matters because finasteride is teratogenic and women who are or may become pregnant must not handle broken or crushed tablets.
Deciding whether to start at all
The honest framing is a trade. On one side, a high probability of halting progression and a modest chance of visible improvement, maintained for as long as treatment continues. On the other, a one to two per cent excess rate of sexual side effects, most reversible, and a small and contested risk of persistent symptoms.
Men weight those differently and both answers are reasonable. What is not reasonable is starting without knowing the second half, discovering it from a forum at month three, and attributing every subsequent difficulty to the tablet.
Questions
How long before I know if it is working?
Twelve months for a fair assessment, with the first signs at three to six. Photographs under the same lighting beat memory.
What happens if I stop?
Loss resumes and the ground gained is lost within about a year. It is a maintenance treatment.
Can women take it?
Not for pattern hair loss in the usual case — it is not licensed for women and is contraindicated in anyone who might become pregnant.
Will it help a receding hairline?
Less than it helps the crown. The frontal hairline responds least in the trial data.
The label these figures come from

Where the facts about Propecia Generic come from
Propecia Generic: the strengths, the dosing, what the film-coated tablet form changes, the contraindications and the interaction warnings set out above are the ones in the approved labelling for finasteride — the current FDA label in DailyMed — read against the European product information where this molecule is licensed in the EU. Where a figure here differs from the one in your own pack insert, the insert for the pack you hold is the document to follow.
Propecia Generic touches the sexual side effects reported with this molecule, and that part of the page was read before publication by Dr. Andrea Biserni, psychologist, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, Ordine degli Psicologi della Toscana n. 3572 sez. A (verify in the national register). The milligrams were not: he is not a prescriber, and the dosing and safety wording for finasteride stays as the regulator wrote it.
How ordering works
Packs of Propecia Generic run from $27.85 to $489.18. The figure covers the medicine, the pharmacist check and tracked delivery; customs charges raised at the destination are not. Dispatch and tracking are set out under shipping and delivery, what can and cannot come back under returns and refunds, and the contract itself in the terms of sale.
Prices quoted for Propecia Generic are indicative; the amount charged is confirmed in writing before any payment is taken. As a prescription-only medicine it is never dispatched without a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber — send it through the prescription service and a pharmacist checks it against the strength and quantity before release. Nothing here replaces advice from your own doctor or pharmacist about finasteride, and the studio does not diagnose or prescribe by e-mail.
