Wellbutrin generic (bupropion): the antidepressant that spares desire
- bupropion
- Prolonged-release tablet
- 150mg, 300mg
- Prescription only
Wellbutrin generic is bupropion, and the reason it keeps its place in a catalogue built around sexual medicine is simple arithmetic: it is the one antidepressant that does not flatten desire. SSRIs cause sexual dysfunction in a third to a half of the people who take them. Bupropion, which works on dopamine and noradrenaline and leaves serotonin alone, causes it at roughly the rate of placebo — and in several trials it improved desire in people who had none to begin with.
Where it is the obvious choice
Three situations. A person who needs treatment for depression and has already lost sexual function to an SSRI, where switching molecule is the cleanest fix. A person starting treatment who tells the prescriber in advance that sexual side effects would be a deal-breaker. And a person with depression whose dominant symptoms are fatigue, flatness and inability to get started, because the activating profile suits that picture better than a sedating drug does.
It is also licensed, in a different brand and formulation, for smoking cessation — the same molecule as varenicline's main alternative. Someone treating depression and trying to stop smoking is getting two indications from one tablet, which is worth raising with a prescriber rather than discovering by accident.
Where it is the wrong choice
Bupropion lowers the seizure threshold, and this is the hard limit on its use. A seizure history rules it out. So does bulimia or anorexia, current or past, because the risk is concentrated in that group. So does abrupt alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, and so does an MAOI within fourteen days.
It is a poor choice in prominent anxiety: the activation that helps a fatigued patient makes an anxious one worse, and for generalised anxiety or panic an SSRI such as escitalopram or buspirone is the better starting point. Insomnia is frequent, which is why the second dose of an immediate-release regimen never goes near bedtime.
Doses and the two formulations
Prolonged-release 150 mg once each morning is the usual start. After a week, 300 mg once daily if needed; that is the maximum for the extended-release form. Immediate-release dosing is 100 mg two or three times daily with at least six hours between doses, which exists mainly for fine adjustment and carries the higher seizure risk of a sharp peak.
Never crush or split the prolonged-release tablet. The entire point of the formulation is a flattened peak concentration, and a crushed tablet delivers an immediate dose that is both above the safe single limit and the reason the seizure risk figures differ between forms.

Side effects, in order of how often they stop treatment
Insomnia leads, followed by dry mouth, headache, nausea, tremor and agitation. Blood pressure rises slightly in some people and should be checked after a few weeks, particularly in anyone already treated for hypertension. Weight tends to fall rather than rise, which distinguishes it from most of the alternatives.
The seizure risk at prolonged-release doses up to 300 mg is around one in a thousand — low, but not zero, and higher in the excluded groups listed above. Bupropion is also a strong CYP2D6 inhibitor, so it raises levels of some beta blockers, antipsychotics, tricyclics and tamoxifen, and it blunts the effect of codeine and tramadol by blocking their conversion to active form.
Switching from an SSRI without a gap in treatment
The usual approach is a cross-taper: the SSRI comes down over two to four weeks while bupropion is started and built up, so there is no unmedicated window. The exception is fluoxetine, whose active metabolite persists for weeks after the last dose and which therefore needs a longer and more careful overlap — relevant to anyone currently on fluoxetine.
An alternative to switching is addition: keeping the SSRI that is working for mood and adding low-dose bupropion for the sexual side effects. The evidence for that is weaker than for switching but it is used, and it avoids risking the response that was achieved. Either route is a prescriber's decision rather than a self-managed one, and both are more durable when the psychological side of the problem is addressed in parallel — the studio's psicoterapia page describes that work. The rest of this group sits under antidepressants.
Questions people actually ask
Will it undo the sexual side effects of my current antidepressant?
If they are caused by the SSRI, switching usually resolves them within two to four weeks. If desire was already low before any medication, the drug is not the cause and changing it will not fix it.
Is it a stimulant?
No, though it feels activating. It acts on dopamine and noradrenaline reuptake, which is why it can improve energy and cause insomnia, but it is not an amphetamine and is not controlled.
Can I drink alcohol on it?
Keep it low. Alcohol tolerance can change, and heavy drinking or abrupt withdrawal from heavy drinking raises seizure risk on this drug specifically.
Why can I not take it if I have had an eating disorder?
Seizures were reported disproportionately in patients with bulimia in the early trials, and the exclusion has stayed in place since. It is one of the few absolute rules attached to the molecule.
The label these figures come from
Dose limits, seizure-risk figures, formulation rules and contraindications follow the FDA prescribing information for bupropion, and the comparative sexual side-effect profile follows the NICE guideline on depression in adults. This page is information, not a prescription.

Where the facts about Wellbutrin Generic come from
Wellbutrin Generic: the strengths, the dosing, what the prolonged-release tablet form changes, the contraindications and the interaction warnings set out above are the ones in the approved labelling for bupropion — the current FDA label in DailyMed — read against the European product information where this molecule is licensed in the EU. Where a figure here differs from the one in your own pack insert, the insert for the pack you hold is the document to follow.
Wellbutrin Generic touches mood, sleep and the sexual side effects that decide whether an antidepressant is kept, and that part of the page was read before publication by Dr. Andrea Biserni, psychologist, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, Ordine degli Psicologi della Toscana n. 3572 sez. A (verify in the national register). The milligrams were not: he is not a prescriber, and the dosing and safety wording for bupropion stays as the regulator wrote it.
How ordering works
Packs of Wellbutrin Generic run from $39.60 to $199.10. The figure covers the medicine, the pharmacist check and tracked delivery; customs charges raised at the destination are not. Dispatch and tracking are set out under shipping and delivery, what can and cannot come back under returns and refunds, and the contract itself in the terms of sale.
Prices quoted for Wellbutrin Generic are indicative; the amount charged is confirmed in writing before any payment is taken. As a prescription-only medicine it is never dispatched without a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber — send it through the prescription service and a pharmacist checks it against the strength and quantity before release. Nothing here replaces advice from your own doctor or pharmacist about bupropion, and the studio does not diagnose or prescribe by e-mail.
